Reaching out to our musicians to broaden the Ensemble’s musical scope has always been a defining element of Hong Kong New Music Ensemble’s programming strategy. With our current season’s vision of OUT:reach, the HKNME offers its young musicians carte blanche in curating a themed recital.

Beyond | Schism is a collection of pieces co-curated by HKNME flautist Angus Lee and clarinettist Linus Fung, exploring static and volatile states of being, from the contemplative yet unsettling Let me die before I wake (Salvatore Sciarrino), the stoic yet evocative Kuroda-Bushi (Toshio Hosokawa), the lyrical yet perturbed Monologue (Isang Yun), to works that pushes the limits of both instruments to their physical limits, such as beyond by Matthias Pintscher, BUG by Bruno Mantovani and Flight by George Benjamin.

This programme — The Listening Room #10 — is co-presented with Osage Gallery & Sigma Projects.

Angus Lee (b. 1992) is one of the most versatile musicians of his generation, having appeared as flautist at international music festivals including, among others, CYCLE Music and Art Festival (IS), Hong Kong Arts Festival, and Lucerne Festival (CH).
Lee graduated from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (2010 – 14) and the Royal Academy of Music in London (2014 – 16), having studied with Olivier Nowak, Samuel Coles and Kate Hill. As a student, he has also already performed under the baton of prominent conductors, such as Lorin Maazel and Christian Thielemann. Lee has been selected for international summer academies as well, such as the Asian Youth Orchestra and the Lucerne Festival Academy.

In 2013, Lee was selected for participation in the Lucerne Festival Academy for the first time, where he worked briefly with the Academy’s founder, composer-conductor Pierre Boulez, performing Dérive 1 (1984) under the composer’s supervision; Lee was nominated to assume the soloist role in Mémoriale (…explosante-fixe... Originel) in 2015 upon his return to the Festival, performing at Boulez’s 90th birthday celebration concert series. Lee retains a strong working relationship with the Lucerne Festival, having returned to perform on tour on multiple occasions. He will also return to the Festival in summer 2022 as a faculty member of the Festival Academy.
Lee joined the Hong Kong New Music Ensemble in 2016, and has since presented the regional premieres of works by leading composers of the day with the group. Lee was also appointed programme manager of the Ensemble since summer 2020.
