NME15 - referring to Hong Kong New Music Ensemble’s upcoming 15th anniversary in 2022/23 - is a visionary series of interconnected projects that witness the HKNME breaking new grounds in areas of education, outreach, research, publication and performances. We are proud to introduce the three programmes.

Sonic-Visual Interplay

Sonic-Visual Interplay, spearheaded by composer Joyce Tang and art critic/curator John Batten, aims at connecting the new music and visual art scenes in Hong Kong. The project unifies the commissioning of music with visual art, and includes educational and community outreach components with the aim of encouraging creative exchanges and dialogues between composers, sound artists, and visual artists.

Alongside Sonic-Visual Interplay is our outreach initiative, CoLab, designed specifically for fifteen emerging composers/visual artists. Participants of this programme experience behind-the-scenes tours of cultural sites and HKNME's interdisciplinary productions, as well as a chance to showcase their own work in a collaborative performance/installation.

Brian Bromberg, Kalen Lee Wing Ki, Cong Wei, Mindy Lui, Winston Yeung, Florence Lam, Rita Yung, Wong Chun Hoi (Hoi9), Eric So Ho-Chi, Katie Siu, Bouie Choi Yuk-Kuen & Bun-Ching Lam.

Shapes Songs - a young person’s guide to totally abstract too-serious music!

As part of our 15th anniversary celebrations, HKNME has made a fresh commitment to invigorating our community and education programs for young people. Curated by artist/composer Samson Young, HKNME will commission 20 short duets for students aged 4-8 years old and their teachers/mentors. Diverse musical approaches will be celebrated, and may include graphic scores, game pieces, as well as traditionally-notated works. The scores will be published internationally, together with fun and original illustrations by local printmakers from Hong Kong, at the end of the project. These illustrations will also form part of the performance programme. Shapes Songs aims to bring together young students, passionate professional musicians, and a group of inspired composers to explore contemporary music and aesthetics in a fun and inspiring way.
