HONG KONG MONOGRAPH is Hong Kong New Music Ensemble’s newest initiative, a recording series documenting some of the Ensemble’s most significant premieres in the past, as well as collaborative works in forthcoming seasons. Last month, we released our recording of Professor Chan Hing-yan’s work Sonic Affairs, commissioned by the HKNME for its 10th Season Opening Concert.
The work was premiered by the Ensemble with soloist Loo Sze-wang under conductor Lio Kuok-man at the Shanghai New Music Week. The album also includes an intriguing interview featuring Professor Chan Hing-yan and Loo Sze-wang, detailing their highly fruitful composer-performer relationship over the years. The recording can be found on the Ensemble’s Bandcamp page [https://hknme.bandcamp.com/community].
Up next in the MONOGRAPH’s catalogue is APOCRYPHA, a work for chamber ensemble by the young Hong Kong composer Angus Lee, who is also the Ensemble’s flautist and programme manager.
Commissioned by the RTHK, APOCRYPHA (2019) was premiered at West Kowloon Cultural District’s special concert ‘Hong Kong x Taiwan Contemporary Classical Music Exchange’ in 2020, conducted by the composer himself. In this studio recording, the details of the work’s intricately multilayered construction can be heard like never before. The recording is expected to be released in early May.
