SONIC ECOLOGY

Sonic Ecology will take place 4-6 December 2020 as a three-day digital conference with performance and installation programmes, presented by the Hong Kong New Music Ensemble. The organising committee welcomes proposals for paper presentations and workshops from a wide variety of interdisciplinary and theoretical perspectives, focusing on innovative sound-based projects that address environmental awareness and engagement. Young Hong Kong-based artists from a wide variety of backgrounds are also invited to apply to a Call for Projects (worth HK$20,000 each) to realise sound-based initiatives that facilitate new artistic connections with the natural world, or to address - directly or conceptually - pressing environmental issues.

CALL FOR PAPERS

 

Contributions from scholars and practitioners are welcomed for the Sonic Ecology Digital Conference. Presentations may focus on, but are not limited to, relevant topics in fields of musical composition, sound art, interdisciplinary creation, acoustic ecology, media arts, visual art, environmental conservation and other sciences. The Sonic Ecology organising committee welcomes proposals for paper presentations and workshops from a wide variety of interdisciplinary and theoretical perspectives. 

 

SESSION FORMATS

 

i). Presentations

 

Presentations by one or more authors, followed by Q&A. Presentations will be 30 minutes, including 10 minutes for Q&A. 

 

ii). Workshops

 

Organised by one or more presenters. The workshops are intended to be interactive events with questions, discussions and networking opportunities. Workshops with creative structures that encourage rich interactions are welcomed. Workshop duration is expected to be 60 minutes. Please indicate clearly in the proposals if more time should be considered. 

 

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

Each proposal must consist of a single PDF document written in English, containing the following information: 

Presentations:

  • The title and abstract, 250 words maximum; 

  • A short biography of the author(s), 250 words maximum for each author. 
     

Workshops:

  • The title and abstract, 250 words maximum; 

  • A brief description of the proposed workshop format and approximate timeline;

  • A brief description of the target audience and expected number of participants;

  • A list of (potential) members of the programme committee, and short biographies of each member (250 words maximum for each member); 

  • Name and contact information of the workshop organiser(s)/ chair(s). Single contact person per submission is preferred. 

 

Selected paper presentations will be included in the online publications of the CARAVANSERAIS series produced and published by the Hong Kong New Music Ensemble.

CALL FOR PROJECTS

 

The main objective of this call for projects is to facilitate new artistic connections with the natural world, addressing issues related to environmental awareness and engagement. HK$20,000 per proposal will be offered to young Hong Kong artists and/or researchers to realise sound-based project proposals, such as musical composition, sound installation, sound walk, public art, sound sculpture, short film and installation. The works will be presented in the 2020 Sonic Ecology programme.

 

ELIGIBILITY 

 

  • Born after 1 January 1990;

  • Hong Kong resident.

Each proposal must consist of the following documents written in English in PDF format:

 

  • CV (1 page);

  • A link to download or view previous work(s) on platforms such as YouTube, soundcloud, Dropbox, Google Drive, etc;

  • Programme and budget plan (maximum 2 pages)^
     

^ A production budget should be minimum HK$10,000, with the remainder consisting of artist fee.
